Thoreau, Landscape Scale Wildlands & Natural Democracy with Jamie Sayen

September 18 @ 7:00 pm - 8:00 pm

Join The Walden Woods Project and RESTORE: The North Woods for a special presentation from wilderness activist and author Jamie Sayen.

Thoreau’s “Maine Woods” provides the most lyrical and ecological introduction to the “mossy and moosey” landscape of undeveloped northern Maine before lumberjacks, paper companies and contemporary land speculators degraded this wild place “not bound to be kind to man.” Thoreau proposed the establishment of reserves decades before the designation of the first national parks. Thoreau, an uncompromising Abolitionist, challenged prevailing views on democracy, asserting: on ethical issues, a person more right than his neighbors already constituted a majority of one.

Forest conservation policies have failed to protect and preserve the ecological integrity of the Acadian Forest, and our degraded democracy has failed to meet the challenge of climate change, wild habitat destruction, and environmental justice. “Children of the Northern Forest: Wild New England’s History from Glaciers to Global Warming” offers a history of the natural and human communities of Acadian Forest region. It suggests that a Natural Democracy must first address the question of land health which requires the preservation of landscape scale wildlands, the transformation of human consumer practices, universal adoption of low-impact land use practices, and environmental justice for all species.

Where: Online. The presentation will begin at 7:00 pm.

Registration required. See below. Co-sponsored by RESTORE: The North Woods.
